2006 News & Events
Cochrane Safeway We Care Program!

The Cochrane Humane Society is thrilled to announce that they are the chosen charity for Cochrane Safeway We Care Program which was officially kicked off in December of 2006.
The We Care Program is a grassroots initiative to support non profit organizations in the community. Store employees collectively choose the non profit they will support and are encouraged to keep involved for the duration of the program.
The Safeway Team set their goal to raise $10,000 in support of the Cochrane
Humane Society and both groups are excited about the new partnership!
2006 Tedi's Legacy Gala

The 2nd annual TEDI’S LEGACY GALA was held at the picturesque Lynx Ridge Golf Club on November 19, 2006 with the proceeds supporting the Cochrane Humane Society. Over 160 guests were treated to a lively fashion show featuring designer labels from Tumbleweedz Fine Clothing Inc and Smyth & Kang., a delicious buffet dinner, exciting door prizes and silent auction.
The CHS would like to extend a very special thank you to Pat Collins, owner of Images Models Inc., for hosting such an enjoyable event in memory of her beloved dog Tedi. We deeply appreciate Pat’s dedication, hard work and support of the CHS. We were very honoured to be invited for a second year to share in this wonderful tribute to such a special little dog.
Thank you to the evenings sponsors, including Tumbleweedz Fine Clothing Inc. and Images Models Inc., in conjunction with NUMA models, Angles at Brentwood and Smyth & Kang. Thank you to Susan Flaherty for emceeing the event and to the many people and donors who helped make the evening a huge success!

Indigo/Chapters FUNdraisers
Thank you to everyone who came to the FUNdraisers at Indigo Signal Hill
on October 26 and Crowfoot Chapters on November 16. Indigo/Chapters
generously donated 10% of all sales proceeds to us on those nights, and
our volunteers showcased a couple of kittens and sold calendars. Thanks
to all our friends, $837 was donated from Indigo/Chapters to the
Cochrane Humane Society to help the animals in need!
2006 Saving Lives Fundraising Art Sale A Success!

The first annual SAVING LIVES FUNDRAISING ART SALE was held at the Bearspaw
Lifestyle Centre on November 4th. Over 300 people attended and shopped
among talented artists and their work. The sale raised just under $6000 for
the shelter and was a very enjoyable, first-time community event.
Thanks to all of the participating artists for being a part of this special
show!
Thanks also go out to the volunteer committee who organized this successful
event!

2006 Gala

The 2006 Gala at Redwood Meadows was once again a quickly SOLD OUT event. The evening started with cocktails as everyone scanned the silent auction items and began placing their bids. Charlee Morgan of Lite 96 did a top notch job emceeing the event and Jack Tennant set the pace for a competitive Live Auction. After a lovely meal in a gorgeous setting came the hi-lite of the evening as the crowd enjoyed Tom Jackson and his band as they delivered a wonderfully entertaining performance.

Next year’s Gala will take place at the Cochrane Ranche House and promises to be another outstanding evening to be enjoyed by all of who get their ticket early enough to attend!
Another Sold Out Event!

The 3rd annual petsDOmatter Charity Golf Tournament, held August 10, was once again a huge success. The annual tournament is held in support of the new Cochrane Humane Society shelter facility, due to begin construction right away!
Clouds lurked above the Links of GlenEagles golf course, but the rain charitably held off until the end of the day. The SOLD OUT tournament was enjoyed by all in attendance; entertained by good friends, food, exciting prizes, and of course a spirited round of golf. The event raised approximately $45,000, bringing us closer to our goal to complete construction of the much-needed new facility.

Cochrane Dodge once again generously donated a minivan which was won in a thrilling and climactic ‘Putt-Off’. Returning participant Randy Mabbott was happy to drive away in his new Pontiac Montana minivan!

A big thanks goes out to our lead sponsors: The Cochrane Eagle and Shell
Canada-Jumping Pound operations. Many thanks to all of the bighearted sponsors,
golfers, and prize donors for making this a fabulous and memorable day. Thank
you to our hardworking volunteers who selflessly put in a giant effort. A
notable thank you goes out to Jack Tennant for being a key organizer and
the emcee of this event!
We were thrilled to again welcome entertainer Tom Jackson and his wife Alison. We truly appreciate their continued support of the Campaign.

Unitarian Church Play and Donation
Division Two of the Religious Education Program of the Unitarian Church of Calgary has chosen the Cochrane Humane Society as its designated "4-others" charitable organization. On April 23, they presented a play to the congregation.
Cochrane Humane Socety staff received a cheque and a letter from the Unitarian Church of Calgary explaining what the group had done and even providing a script of the play! The staff at the shelter were genuinely touched by this effort and would like to say a big thank you to the Youth Division 2 for their efforts. The play was well researched and carefully thought out to reflect the values and goals of the Cochrane Humane Society and its campaign to raise funds for a new facility. Thank you again from all of us here at the Cochrane Humane Society and please do come and visit us!
Some play excerpts: "One fine day, a stray cat wandered into the Town of Cochrane. She came upon a dog out for a walk with its owner. "I’m sooo hungry and thirsty," meowed the cat. "Do you know where I can find some food and a safe place to sleep?" . . ."Why yes I do," the dog replied. "You can head down to the Cochrane Humane Society, and they’ll take great care of you! The Cochrane Humane Society is a charitable organization dedicated to the well-being of animals. They have a small building and a mobile home. They’ll feed you and help you find a family to adopt you. But I warn you, the town of Cochrane has grown a lot, so there are a lot more animals coming into the shelter these days . . ."
(Later, Cochrane Humane Society Volunteer to cat:) "We’ll try and help you, but you see our shelter is really small and crowded. Crowded to overflowing it seems. We just have this dilapidated shed and an old trailer. And the roof leaks! We actually have to pile animal crates on top of each other. We’re aiming to raise 1.7 million dollars to build a 10,000 square foot facility."
All Span Donation!

We would like to thank All Span Building Systems Ltd. for generously offering to donate the trusses for our planned, new shelter roof. This donation is valued at $20,000! Thank you All Span!
In-kind donations such as the generous gift from All Span can be as valuable as cash to our new building fund. There are many building materials, and much equipment still needed for the new shelter so if you think you or your company can help us with an in-kind donation, please contact Tracy Keith at 932-2072.

This year’s Volunteer Recognition Evening was a cheery gathering of many of our dedicated volunteers. Weedon Hall was the perfect setting for this get together and the smell of lilacs from every table was wonderful! There was tasty food provided by Extreme Cuisine and complimentary wine was available courtesy of Fosters Wine Estates.
There were two highlights to the evening that made this event unique. One was the entertainment - belly dancing artistically performed by employee and volunteer Shellie Clare. Shellie was just fantastic and really impressed the crowd with her talent.
The second highlight was that a very scared, injured cat that was noticed outside the hall was rescued and taken home by Executive Director Tracy Keith. It was commented during the evening that the cat couldn’t have picked a better party to crash! As it turned out, that injured kitty was about to have four kittens! "Weedon" as she has affectionately been named, is resting safely at the home of Tracy Keith with her four lovely kittens.
Thank you again volunteers for all your hard work and dedication! We hope you enjoyed the evening.

Bob Sled Challenge!
Ralph the Dog of the Calgary Stampeders put his PAW down for charity on
February 23rd at Canada Olympic Park. Ralph participated in our first ever
Bob Sled competition to help bring the Cochrane Humane Society home on the
final leg of its petsDOmatter Capital Campaign to raise $1.7 million for
a new facility.
Riding with Ralph the Dog was Linda Slobodian of the Calgary Herald, an avid pet lover and supporter of the Cochrane Humane Society since its early days! Ralph and Linda competed against CTV's Glen Campbell and Heath Brown in Sled # 2, and Cochrane's own Jack Tennant and Alex Baum in Sled #3. Jack Tennant is Chair of the petsDOmatter Campaign, and Publisher of the Cochrane Eagle Newspaper, and Alex Baum of Cochrane Dodge is a big supporter of the Humane Society!
These teams challenged not only each other but everyone watching to make
their contribution to this much needed new building project that is only
$300,000.00 away from its $1.7 million dollar goal. Congratulations to Cochrane’s
own Jack Tennant and Alex Baum for winning First Place! We had a great volunteer
turnout and Bob Sleds FLEW!
Special Thanks to Linda Slobodian, Glen Campbel, Heath Brown, Jack Tennant,
Alex Baum, and our volunteers for braving the elements and participating
in this fun day to raise awareness for the Cochrane Humane Society’s petsDOmatter
Capital Campaign. Thank you to Canada Olympic Park and staff for hosting
our event and that made this bobsled competition a success!
