Board of Directors

Founded in 1998, the Cochrane & Area Humane Society (CAHS) operates with the philosophy of giving all adoptable animals a second chance at life. Along with 18 employees (12 full time equivalents) and over 200 volunteers, the CAHS Board of Directors is a dedicated group of volunteers who serve the organization in two year terms, to a maximum of six years.

The responsibility of the CAHS Board is to ensure that the shelter is managed in the best interests of the animals in the shelter’s care. Our goal is to maintain strong governance principles that are essential for supporting CAHS management in providing high quality care for animals in need and increasing public awareness and confidence in the Cochrane & Area Humane Society. Brian Younger – Chair

Brian rejoined the CAHS Board in January 2014. He has been a volunteer with the CAHS since 2000 and previously served on the Board from 2001-2003 as Vice-Chair, and 2003-2008 as Chair. Brian holds B.Sc. and M.Math degrees in Computer Science and worked for many years in software development, holding positions requiring both technical and management leadership. When not volunteering with the CAHS, Brian enjoys the company of his three mischievous cats Forrest Gump, Finnegan, and Keiko.

Sean Carrie  – Vice Chair

Sean joined the CAHS Board of Directors in January, 2014, and chairs the Board’s Risk Management Committee. He holds a BA from McGill University and a law degree from the University of Calgary. Sean is a litigation lawyer with JSS Barristers in Calgary, and was previously Case Management Counsel at the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted in Toronto. Having both been dedicated animal lovers since early childhood, Sean and his partner, Laura, adopted their dog, Balu, from the shelter in 2008.

Jeff Paulson – Board Secretary

Jeff joined the CAHS Board of Directors in April 2015 as Board Secretary.  Jeff is a senior lawyer and corporate governance professional with many years of legal and business experience.  Prior to his recent retirement he was Vice-President, Corporate Legal Services & Corporate Secretary for Encana Corporation where he managed all legal matters relating to corporate securities, corporate finance, M&A, human resources, intellectual property, real estate and litigation, together with all matters relating to the Board of Directors, as well as Encana’s 50+ subsidiary companies and partnerships.  Jeff is a Cochrane resident and in addition to his wife and two adult children, his family includes Bo, a ridiculously cute Havanese dog, as well as guinea pigs Ben and Marble, and Cornilius the corn snake.

Wendy Henkelman – Treasurer

Wendy joined the CAHS Board of Directors in January 2014 as Treasurer. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a Chartered Accountant. She has held various senior finance positions in the oil and gas industry throughout her career including leading an international tax group and being the executive responsible for treasury, audit and information systems. She has had a passion for animals her whole life and has happily shared her home with cats and dogs. She currently has two cats that she has adopted from rescue agencies.

Suzanne Ebelher

Suzanne joined the CAHS Board in April 2014. She has been a volunteer with CAHS since 2012 including being a foster home for a few of CAHS’s canine guests. Suzanne is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC), CHRP and MBA and has been in business consulting for over 15 years assisting clients with strategic planning, HR consulting, business planning, organizational effectiveness in addition to many other areas. Suzanne’s non profit / volunteer experience has spanned various roles with organizations such as Parkinson Alberta Society, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Progress Club – Elevate, and Calgary Police – Victim Assistance Unit. Suzanne enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, and of course, Thunder, a foster dog from CAHS that Bryan and Suzanne had to adopt because he was so adorable!

Lisa Murphy

Lisa joined the CAHS Board as a director in January of 2014. Through the years, she has served as a director on various non-profit boards including Calgary Opera and The Famous Five Foundation. Lisa has been in financial services for 25 years and is currently Vice President of Alberta Private Client at ATB Financial. Lisa enjoys a busy lifestyle with an active family including 2 cats, Cookie and Leo. Cookie Murphy was happily adopted from the Shelter.

Hayley Saunders

Hayley has been on the Cochrane and Area Humane Society’s Board of Directors since April 2014. She has a Bachelor of Applied Arts Degree in Radio and Television Communications and freelanced for many years in the television industry in Calgary. For the last 7 years, Hayley has worked in a variety of roles in the non-profit sector. Hayley is passionate about helping animals in need and has volunteered with animal rescue organizations for the last 25 years. Since 2012 she has volunteered as a foster home for the Cochrane and Area Humane Society. Hayley feels blessed to have adopted the late Pumpkin from the CAHS (and misses her incredibly!). Hayley shares her time with her children, Georgia and Jack, and rescue dog, Annie.

Wendy Marshall

Wendy joined the CAHS Board of Directors in February 2015. She emigrated to Canada from England with her husband and son in 2003, and in 2008 they all became Canadian Citizens. She is a Fellow Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (FMAAT) in England; holds a Professional Management Certificate, specializing in Risk Management from the University of Calgary; and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). She is currently the Manager, Cash Management for Morguard Investments Ltd. Prior to this has held various senior Accounting positions within the financial and construction industry. Wendy has grown up with many animals from ferrets to goats and has always had a dog in her life, mainly Border Collies. Now that her son has gone to university, Wendy and her husband have filled their empty nest with two Border Collies, Ozzy and Benji.

Sandy Walker

Sandy joined the board in March 2015 soon after adopting Jethro from the CAHS shelter. Sandy has an MBA from Royal Roads University for whom she currently teaches strategic leadership and business strategy courses online. She also runs a consulting company that focuses on strategic planning services. Additionally, she is an active board member for the Alpine Club of Canada. Sandy brings business experience from working in various industries in the private, government, and not-for-profit sectors. When not working, Sandy and Jethro spend their days climbing and backcountry skiing around their home in Canmore AB.

Cosmo

Adopted

We wanted to send an adoption/birthday update on Cosmo (formally Delilah) Cosmo is doing as wonderful as ever. She spends her days tanning in front of the windows or sleeping soundly on any piece of furniture or clothing she can find. She is still a bit weary of the family dog but for the most part they co-exist in peace. She and our other cat Bynx get along better and better everyday, even sharing tanning spots and sharing from the same bowl of food. Cosmo still talks nonstop and follows us wherever we go, she is very curious!
We love Cosmo so much and feel so grateful that no one else adopted her before us.
