We Do It Because We Care

Each year the number of animals we care for increases, as do the costs to provide a safe and healthy environment for them. All animals entering our shelter receive basic veterinary care and are spayed or neutered to prevent more unwanted litters. However, in many cases where an animal is sick, abused, or injured, they require extra veterinary care and TLC.

There are many ways you can help the animals whether it is through your membership with the society, volunteerism, monetary donations, fostering animals, donations of goods in kind, or by joining our team of caring staff.

Although dollars are always an on-going demand, there are many donations of goods-in-kind that are used at the shelter on a daily basis. Our wish-list consists of these items and is updated regularly; many of the items are an on-going need at the shelter and will remain on the list indefinitely.

PAWS – Pre-Authorized Withdrawal System

PAWS is available to anyone wishing to make regular and hassle free donations to the animals. A donation in the amount of your choice is automatically withdrawn from your bank account at the same time each month. Not only is it easy for the donor, but it allows the shelter to plan ahead. Each individual receives one tax receipt at the end of the year for their total giving amount… it’s as easy as that! Click here to register online for the PAWS Program.

For more information on the program or to set up direct withdrawal from your bank account please email the shelter or phone us at (403) 932-2072.

Make My Day Program

Support a pet with the Make My Day Program for one day, one week or one month.  Each pet that is waiting to be adopted needs food, care, medical attention, love and socialization. By looking at the overall costs to operate the shelter and rescue, rehabilitate and re-home the animals that come into our care, we’ve calculated the cost to support a dog, cat or small animal on a per day basis: Make the Day of a dog for $40, Make the Day of a cat for $20, Make the Day of a small animal companion for $20.

When you participate in the Make My Day Program, you know you are helping an animal in need right now.  Perfect for Schools or for individuals who want to support the Cochrane & Area Humane Society in a way that has direct benefits to the animals. Or give to the Make My Day Program in honour of someone and you can send them an eCard with a message from CAHS animalsl! If there is a specific animal you’d like to make the day of, simply include that animal’s name in the notes of your online donation. Click here to Make the Day of a needy pet.

In Honour, Celebration and In Memory Donations

You can make a donation in memory of a loved one or in their honour. In honour or celebration donations allow you to recognize a special occasion such as birthday, anniversary or Christmas. The donation can be done entirely on-line with you receiving an email tax receipt and the honoure getting an eCard chosen by you!

In memory donations can be a tribute to an animal or human family member using the eCard donation option.

Norman’s Cat Fund

This special fund has been created in Norman’s memory. All gifts made in his name will support the care and well-being of cats at the Cochrane & Area Humane Society. Norman was the CAHS shelter cat for 15 years. One of the first cats to enter our doors, he was extremely timid and shy and we spent months to get him comfortable with us handling him. Although he never had a mean bone in him and did not aggress toward people it took years of gentle care to get him comfortable around all humans and to make him the companion he became to the many shelter volunteers and staff. The cat who greeted everyone and strutted confidently down the hallways like he owned the place – which he did.

Norman had some official duties while living at CAHS, including assessing how well shelter animals will get along with cats before going home with a new family. He even helped interview potential new staff members and volunteers – demanding to be let into the office and hopping up on the lap of the candidate as if to say ‘You’re all dressed up, let’s see how you really feel about cats.’ He was an excellent judge of character. But most of all Norman was there for all of us at the shelter.

Norman is a testament to all ‘street cats,’ proving why the CAHS believes they are deserving of opportunity and a loving home. By making a donation to Norman’s Fund, you are giving other cats like him a chance. Click here to donate to Norman’s Fund.

I want to Donate

We wanted to send an adoption/birthday update on Cosmo (formally Delilah) Cosmo is doing as wonderful as ever. She spends her days tanning in front of the windows or sleeping soundly on any piece of furniture or clothing she can find. She is still a bit weary of the family dog but for the most part they co-exist in peace. She and our other cat Bynx get along better and better everyday, even sharing tanning spots and sharing from the same bowl of food. Cosmo still talks nonstop and follows us wherever we go, she is very curious!
We love Cosmo so much and feel so grateful that no one else adopted her before us.
Thank you as always, for all you do.

Meet. Adopt. Love.
